Dear Friends and Distinguished Guests:
On behalf of my faculty, colleagues, staff and students, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you as you visit and discover Shantou University Medical College. I am particularly grateful to you because you recognize that, unlike large national universities in China that often cater to people’s desire for prestige and glamour, SUMC strives for excellence in the services she provides to her students, her patients, her community, her country and to the world. As such, SUMC will be your most worthy partner as you continue on your quest toward a bright and promising future.
SUMC, a vital part of Shantou University, was founded in 1983 with continued generous support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation. Mr. Li Ka-shing, one of modern China’s greatest patriots, has set a vision for building a world-class university that not only provides excellent educational opportunities, but also produces young people with hearts of public service. Despite her short history and humble beginnings, it was SUMC’s outstanding people who rose to the occasion and made her the success she is today.
SUMC’s success is reflected in the story of Xiao Xu, a medical student of Class 2008. She undertook the challenge of studying in our English-based medical program and went on to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE Step 1) along with eleven other classmates. This goes to prove that the performance of SUMC students is comparable to that of any American medical student. In her subsequent clinical clerkship at Oxford University, she realized that the medical training she acquired at SUMC matched-if not exceeded-that of her British counterparts, and she was frequently commended by her instructors. In addition to her academic achievements, Xiao Xu regularly serves as a student volunteer in the hospice care charity program sponsored by SUMC and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. She and her team visit late-stage cancer patients and their families. She said: "In these visits, I witnessed the limitations of medical knowledge in providing cure to these patients. I also discover how a physician can assist patients in a meaningful and effective way that goes beyond medical knowledge." It gives me great pride to know that SUMC has produced and continues to produce the kind of physician that is not only internationally competitive but also possesses the heart of a servant.
As with any growing institution, SUMC will face great challenges and opportunities before new breakthroughs are made. The people of SUMC will never accept the status quo and are determined to base our education, research, medical care and services on internationally accepted professional standards. Our mission statement is to lead by being student-centered in medical education, patient-centered in health service delivery, application-centered in biomedical and clinical research, public interest-centered in community service, and faculty and staff-centered in professional development at SUMC.
Please join us in making this your personal mission as well and SUMC the best place for innovation, dedication and exemplary professionalism.
