On 31 October 2011 the AHA Emergency Cardiovascular Care Training Center of SUMC was officially inaugurated.

During the inauguration ceremony the center's official plaque was revealed jointly by the head of the Shantou Municipal Public Health Bureau, Mr. Junkai Chen, and the AHA regional chief instructor, Mr. Jiang Guoyi, together with SUMC Dean Jiang Gu and Dr. Frieda Law of the Li Ka Shing Foundation and in the presence of several leaders and teachers from the Education Dept and the Clinical Skills Center, as well as the first batch of instructors of the training center.

The American Heart Association (AHA) is a non-profit organization in the field of cardiac care headquartered in Dallas, US. The AHA is regarded as one of the most authoritative institutions worldwide in its field and publishes widely accepted standards for basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) and cardiopulmonary recovery (CPR). The AHA operates a network of certified training centers around the globe.

The AHA Emergency Cardiovascular Care Training Center of SUMC is the first and only training center in eastern Guangdong to offer fully AHA-accredited training courses including BLS and ACLS certification. This professional platform and its state-of-the-art equipment, will enable SUMC's dedicated team of instructors to help improve cardiovascular care in the region by training future generations of emergency cardiovascular care experts.
