JSIEC-Purdue Joint Laboratory opens in Shantou

The STU-CUHK Joint Shantou International Eye Center (JSIEC) has collaborated with Purdue University to establish a joint laboratory in Shantou for developing new eye drugs.

On 22 June, the formal opening ceremony of the JSIEC-Purdue Joint Laboratory was held at JSIEC, Shantou. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Richard Kuhn and Dr. Xuhui Liang from the Department of Biological Sciences of Purdue University, Dr. Frieda Law of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, SUMC Dean Junhui Bian, Prof. Gang-gang Shi, Party Secretary of SUMC, Prof. Dong-yang Huang, Executive Vice Dean of SUMC, Prof. Calvin C.P. Pang, Director of JSIEC and Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of CUHK, Prof. Ming-zhi Zhang, Administrative Vice Director of JSIEC, and several guests from other institutes.

In recent years, JSIEC led by Prof Calvin Pang has achieved great progress in research, particularly in the development of new drugs for eye diseases that can cause blindness. The new joint lab will use zebrafish to screen various effective ingredients in herbs on a large scale so as to develop new effective drugs for the clinical treatment of retinal degeneration diseases.
