On November 6, a biomedical expert from the University of Miami, Professor Herman Cheung gave a lecture on the topic “Neural Crest Stem Cells- a Potential Cell Source for Cellular Therapy for Eye Diseases” to the ophthalmologists of the STU-CUHK Joint Shantou International Eye Center (JSIEC) and SUMC students and faculties, which was chaired by Professor Junhui Bian, Executive Dean of SUMC. Dr. Frieda Law of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Professor Calvin C.P. Pang, Director of JSIEC, together with other senior leaders and experts also attended the lecture. According to Professor Cheung’s talk, it has been proved that neural stem cells can be induced to differentiate into retinal pigment epithelium cells and this provides inspiration for the applied research on retinal diseases, corneal diseases and dry eye syndromes. The lecture concluded with an active Q & A session.
