A delegation from UCSF School of Nursing headed by the Dean, Dr. David Vlahov visited SUMC between November 12 and 14. The delegation consisted of specialists in public health, HIV/AIDS prevention, nursing administration, pediatric nursing, and doctoral education in nursing.

During the formal welcome meeting, Professor Junhui Bian, Executive Dean of SUMC briefed the delegates on the status quo and directions of development of SUMC. Next, Dr. Frieda Law, Representative of Li Ka Shing Foundation at SUMC gave a brief introduction to the Li Ka Shing Foundation, and Dr. Jing Su delivered a presentation on recent developments of the nursing program of SUMC and challenges in its implementation. Afterwards, the delegates visited the Clinical Skills Center and the five affiliated hospitals of SUMC, communicating with the clinical nursing staff, nursing students and faculty members. The delegates were impressed by the individual features of each hospital.

On the afternoon of November 14, the visiting delegates gave presentations on the teaching and research programs at UCSF School of Nursing and particularly the part-time Master’s program which the audience were more interested in. At the evening meeting, the delegates and the Class 2012 and Class 2013 nursing students communicated enthusiastically on many aspects of nursing. The delegates spoke highly of the students’ English proficiency as well as their enthusiasm for studying nursing, while the students reported greater confidence in studying nursing after the talk with these international specialists in nursing.

This visit saw a great progress that SUMC and UCSF School of Nursing have announced their intent to partner on the nursing education, postgraduate training and clinical nursing research that will help improve the quality of nursing education and research of SUMC.
