SUMC Achieves Breakthroughs in Esophageal Cancer Research

2017-11-23

Prof. Min Su and his colleagues from the Department of Pathology and Cancer Hospital of SUMC have been cooperating with their counterparts in Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Genomics, Novogene Co, Ltd, Beijing, Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology to research into genetic changes that occur in esophageal cells during the development of Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), which is the most common subtype of esophageal cancer, and have recently published their latest findings in the paper “Genetic Alterations in Esophageal Tissues From Squamous Dysplasia to Carcinoma” in the Gastroenterology, with our PhD student Qian Liu as the first author.

The research team analyzed mutations and gene copy number changes in nontumor, IEN, and ESCC samples, collected from 70 patients from the Chaoshan area, a high risk region for ESCC in China. It was found that the prevalence of chronic inflammation was as high as 68.85% and the level of inflammation and DNA damage are correlated positively with cellular atypia in nontumor samples. Their analysis results showed that IEN and ESCCs each had similar mutations and markers of genomic instability, including apolipoprotein B messenger RNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide-like.

In their current research, Prof Su’s team present the preliminary exploration of genetic variations in the multistage carcinogenesis of ESCC and provide new insights into the architecture of ESCC progression. Genomic changes observed in precancerous lesions might be used to identify patients at risk for ESCC.
