On November 17-18, Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) hosted the 2018 East-West Alliance (EWA) Symposium, together with the 5th SUMC Research Day. The two-day conference saw over 30 delegates from 14 medical institutions from six countries as well as Hong Kong gather in Shantou to exchange views on the themes of "What makes an impactful institution? ".

Vice Chancellor Lin Danming of Shantou University, Executive Dean Junhui Bian and Dr Frieda Law from LKS Foundation delivered the opening addresses at the opening ceremony.

Participants included senior academic leaders and medical education experts from the EWA members, including University of Cambridge, University of California at Berkeley, University of Alberta, University of Manitoba, St. Michael Hospital, University Medical Center Groningen, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Michigan, University of Melbourne and Shantou University.

Two-day program included plenary and three parallel sessions covering the areas of Education & Research, Health Care System, and Institutional Effectiveness/Resilience.

This year SUMC also made the 5th Annual SUMC Research Day concurrent to the 2018 EWA Symposium and invited the EWA delegates to judge SUMC students’ posters and oral presentations.

This conference served as a great platform for experts and scholars in medicine and related fields to share ideas and work together to improve the quality of medical education, health care services and scientific research. It also provided opportunities for SUMC students to truly participate in and benefit from the event
