On September 18-19, Prof Martin Smit, Dean, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and Prof Han Moshage, Director, International Relations, University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), Netherlands visited SUMC and engaged in in-depth discussions on the Joint PhD Program between the two institutions.

The UMCG delegates were also invited to meet with the faculty and student representatives. During the meeting, they introduced the education and research at UMCG as well as the progress on the UMCG-SUMC Joint PhD Program, followed by the Q & A session on supervisor selection, how to apply, scholarship and cooperative training model.

At the wrap-up meeting, SUMC Dean Tan Xuerui affirmed that the Joint PhD Program empowers students with improved critical thinking skills and creative skills as well as broader horizons.

Since the initiation in 2009, 31 students and young faculty members have been admitted to the UMCG-SUMC Joint PhD Program and 11 of them have got their PhD degree.
