The First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College was founded in 1989. It has attained the highest level in China's hospital rating system (level 3A), and is ranked in the Top 100 of "Best Chinese Hospitals".

The First Affiliated Hospital is a modern, comprehensive hospital with widely recognized strengths and expertise in such fields as cardiology, internal medicine, rheumatism, neurosurgery, general surgery, orthopedics, hematology, and molecular imaging. The department of cardiology has been designated as a "Key Medical Specialty" by the province of Guangdong, as the only such key specialty outside the provincial capital Guangzhou. Additionally, The First Affiliated Hospital has been selected as one of 65 Education Centers of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in China and the only one in eastern Guangdong.

The First Affiliated Hospital currently has 2,423 employees and 1,816 patient beds. It comprises 59 clinical departments, 11 technical departments, 12 teaching departments and 6 laboratories. There are extensive teaching facilities for our students including classrooms, demonstration rooms, clinical skills training rooms, libraries, electronic reading rooms, and multimedia classrooms, as well as student accommodation.
