The Mental Health Center of Shantou University is a hospital specializing in mental health diagnosis and treatment. It was founded in 1987 by the famous Chinese psychiatrist and former Dean of SUMC, Prof. Zheng-yi Wu (1912-1996).

After three decades of steady development and progress, the center has become a widely recognized, comprehensive institute excelling in patient care, education & research, and community service in the field of mental health. It was the first institution in Guangdong province to be accredited for post-graduate psychiatry education and professional psychiatrist training.

The Mental Health Center currently has 300 hospital beds and some 170 employees. The center is characterized by its comprehensive therapies, open management style, family-life atmosphere and peaceful, garden-like surroundings.
