The Associated Guangdong General Hospital of SUMC was founded in 1946. Nowadays, it is the largest comprehensive hospital in Guangdong, and also one of the largest and best hospitals in mainland China.
Among its many medical specialties cardiology perhaps stands out the most. The hospital's cardiovascular department takes a leading position in the country in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and has been appointed as WHO collaborative research center. Other key distinctive specialties of the Associated Southern China Hospital include oncology, pulmonology (lung cancer), nephrology, neurology hematology and geriatrics.
The hospital has 5,226 staff members and over 2,700 hospital beds.
The Guangdong General Hospital has been voted the most reliable hospital in mainland China by Hong Kong residents. In 2006 it became an associated teaching hospital of SUMC.
