An Introduction to the Foreign Language Department

The Foreign Language Department is mainly responsible for the teaching of and research on college English, as well as the teaching of English for Medicine and English for Science. Our team is made up of 1 professor, 4 associate professors, 3 lecturers, 2 assistants and 1 technician, among whom 6 are master degree holders and 3 are PhDs.

The department has well developed into an important platform for improving students' comprehensive English skills, with a multilayer teaching system covering programs for undergraduates, postgraduates and Ph D students. The directors of the department, Prof. Rongxin and Prof. Suning, are well established in areas such as Applied Linguistics and English Teaching.

Remarkable achievement has been scored by the department in the reform and innovation of teaching, as illustrated in STMC students' high pass rates in CET 4 and CET 6 over the years, which surpassed those of students from other key national universities. The pass rate of 5-year undergraduates in Grade 2008 and 2009 majoring in Clinical Medicine reached 90% and 92.77% respectively. All the students of Grade 2006 and Grade 2009 majoring in Nursing passed CET 4, achieving a 100% pass rate. For seven consecutive years from 2004 to 2011, the pass rate of 7-year students majoring in Clinical Medline remained above 95%. This has substantially contributed to the construction of "211" Project and the"Quality Teaching" campaign of STMC.

In recent years, responding to the requirements for teaching and reform of college English in piloted schools, and taking into consideration the characteristics of foreign language teaching at the medical college, the department has launched pragmatic plans for college English teaching reform and developed a personalized all-round foreign language teaching modes, which enable students to enhance their comprehensive English skills (both verbal and written) on their own initiative. Our efforts in this regard encompass emphasizing teachers' professional development, raising students' overall English proficiency and their preparedness and competence in cross-cultural communication, and cultivating the atmosphere of English learning on campus.  In brief, the department has stuck to the principle of improving the quality of teaching by stepping up reform.

Foreign language teaching of the department is targeted at students of all levels in STMC and customized to their diverse needs. As for teaching in 7-year program (joint fundamental and master degree), the department aims to upgrade students' overall language and communication competence in response to the higher requirements of College English Syllabus. With regard to the teaching of undergraduates in the 5-year program, the department emphasizes the importance of improving comprehensive English skills, especially listening and speaking so as to meet the general requirements of College English Syllabus.  When it comes to vocational and adult education, teaching is conducted in accordance with students' individual aptitudes from which each gains the most benefits.  With an eye to improving English teaching and to cultivate students' practical English skills, teachers of the department hold a multitude of extra-curriculum activities such as English Consultation Service, English Speaking Competition and lectures on English culture. Every year in November and December, the department holds Scientific and Technological English Cultural Festival, as well as lectures that prepare students for various college English exams.

With extensive teaching experience from years' of growth, the department has been widely acclaimed by the management and students of the college. Our students' scores in CET 4 and CET 6 have been on the rise year by year. The rate of pass in CET 4 in recent years is shown in Table 1, Table 2 and Table 3.

Our students' applied English competence have been increasing. Since 1997, excellent STMC graduates have been selected to join the interflow schemes at Ehime University in Japan, and University of Manitoba in Canada.  Since 1999, in the case discussions centered upon CPC held regularly between STMC and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, our students have impressed their counterparts with very strong command of English.

Currently, the department has transformed itself into a team that syntheses teaching and research by incorporating all resources and bringing into full play all the members' solid theoretical foundation and advanced teaching concepts. All the team members work with tremendous drive and enthusiasm to enhance the quality of foreign language teaching in STMC. Thanks to the steady development of the college, the department will grow from strength to strength through practice.
