History

The history of Shantou University Medical College dates back to 1924. In that year our direct predecessor, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School, was founded. In 1959, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School obtained approval from the Chinese State Council to expand into a generic medical college offering 3-year training programs in clinical medicine. The name was changed into Guangdong Province Shantou Medical Vocational School.

When Shantou University was established in 1981, Shantou Medical Vocational School merged into the newly founded university as the medical college, and our name was changed into Shantou University Medical College (SUMC). From 1983, SUMC started offering formal 5-year bachelor programs in Clinical Medicine. In the 90's of the previous century, we also started offering master and doctorate programs in Medicine.

The past few decades has seen SUMC achieving major accomplishments both in education and research. Our college was enlisted in the prestigious "Project 211" as one of the top universities in south China. In 2002, we were the first medical college in China to implement a new teaching model of cross-disciplinary problem-based learning (PBL), gaining wide recognition. Several of our programs have been recognized as national and provincial key programs, and many of our laboratories have gained similar recognition. Since the turn of the millennium, the number of national and provincial research grants rose steadily, resulting in a sharp increase of SCI publications in the last 5 years.
