On 28 June 2013, the SUMC Construction Project Kick-off Ceremony was held in the Multidisciplinary Centre of Shantou University (STU). Mr. Li Ka-shing, President of the LKS Foundation and Honorary Chairman of the STU Council, the city leader Maohui Chen, STU President Xiaohu Xu and Vice Presidents Dan Li, Danming Lin, SUMC Executive Dean Junhui Bian, together with other members of the STU Council, several distinguished guests, senior leaders of SUMC, faculty and student representatives participated in the ceremony, while STU Vice President Danming Lin chaired the ceremony.

The new SUMC will be not only a superbly designed building, but also an embodiment of confidence and best wishes; it will create a better learning environment for our students and provide the most advanced knowledge and technical support to alleviate patients’ suffering and improve people’s health, as SUMC Dean Bian put it at the ceremony. He added that the SUMC faculty and staff would bear Mr. Li’s words in mind and strive to build SUMC into one of the world’s best medical schools.

62 medical graduates in scrubs recited the Hippocratic Oath. In addition, a memento containing the Hippocratic Oath and a Superman figurine in scrubs were presented to Mr. Li Ka-shing in appreciation of his strong support for the new SUMC.

The new SUMC will be located at the STU campus, covering an area of nearly 50,000 square meters. It will be life sciences-centered and fully multidisciplinary by integrating valuable resources of STU.
