On 29 June 2013 Prof. Lian Ma and Dr. Weizhong Li of the Department of Pediatrics of The Second Affiliated Hospital of SUMC attended the 2013 Plaque Awarding Ceremony for American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) China Education Centers which was held in Xi’an, China. At the ceremony, Prof. Ma introduced the developments of the Department of Pediatrics of The Second Affiliated Hospital of SUMC to the audience of more than 500 pediatricians from all over the country.

This year, only 16 Chinese hospitals were designated AAP education centers, including The Second Affiliated Hospital of SUMC, Peking University First Hospital, The General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, Children’s Hospital of Shanghai, West China Second University Hospital and others.

The AAP, with a membership of more than 60,000 pediatricians, currently is the world’s most authoritative association in the field of pediatrics. It boasts the richest resources for practice and an advanced education and training system. Only a national key pediatric hospital/unit is eligible to apply for designation as an AAP education center. It must meet rigorous standards and pass the accreditation by the AAP.

Prof. Lian Ma has been appointed as director of the AAP education center in The Second Affiliated Hospital of SUMC, while Prof. Guangyu Lin and Dr. Weizhong Li as instructors.
