This summer, our students Song-tao Wu and Jia-qi Huang selected from the G-2009 undergraduate program participated in a four-week clerkship from July 15 to August 9, 2013 in the Hyogo College of Medicine, Japan.

During the clerkship in the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Wu and Huang under the supervision of Dr. Okada, Dr. Hirano and Dr. Nakamura, experienced the hepatocellular carcinoma surgery and 3D laparoscopic cholecystectomy, observed the surgeries like laparoscopic hernia repair, ERCP, RFA, IVR and da Vinci prostatectomy, and also practiced laparoscopy skills and 3D reconstruction of liver blood vessels on the model. They then visited the Microbiology Laboratory where they were trained by Dr. Uchiyama and Dr. Iwami in immunological staining techniques.

Wu and Huang had an excellent clerkship experience. They were deeply impressed by the advanced medical technology, dedicated medical staff, harmonious doctor-patient relationship, and precise research work in Japan. Excitingly, they were admitted to candidacy for a doctoral degree in the Hyogo College of Medicine at the end of the training. When they expressed such hope, Prof. Fujita agreed readily, "I hope you could come to my department and do research with me for finding ‘what’s new’ in medicine."

This is the first time that we have sent undergraduate students for clerkship in the Hyogo College of Medicine, and for the first time, the exchange undergraduate students have received the overseas trainer’s admission to candidacy for a doctoral degree. Our school will continue to develop the student exchange programs and attempt to send more qualified undergraduate and graduate students for medical training in the Hyogo College of Medicine, aiming to produce competent healthcare professionals who can meet international standards.
