On October 19 and 20, Shantou University Medical College hosted the Joint Conference on the 7^th East West Alliance ("EWA") Conference and the 14th Medical Education Conference ("MEC") for China Mainland, Taiwan and the Hong Kong Region. The two-day conference saw around 220 delegates from 56 medical institutions from 8 countries and areas gather in Shantou to exchange views on the themes of "Medical Education Reform in the Information Age" on the first day and "General Practice and Preventive Medicine in Clinical Medical Education" on the second day.

Officers from the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Guangdong Education Department and representatives from National Yang Ming University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Peking University attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Professor Gu Peihua, Provost of Shantou University, delivered the opening address on behalf of Shantou University, while Professor Junhui Bian, Executive Dean of SUMC, chaired the opening ceremony.

Participants included senior academic leaders and medical education experts from Oxford University, Cambridge University, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Alberta, University of Manitoba, University of Toronto St. Michael Hospital, University Medical Center Groningen, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of California, San Francisco, MEDtube, OnSurg LLC, National Yang Ming University in Taiwan, Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing Medical University, Sichuan University, Shandong University, Third Military Medical University, China Medical University, Jilin University, Shanxi Medical University, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou Medical University and Shantou University.

The presentations and discussions during the two-day program covered a broad range of topics including precision medicine and education, on-line learning, student assessment, faculty development, internship training, reform in medical education, use of technology in teaching and learning, and PBL in medical education.

This conference served as a great platform for experts and scholars in medicine and related fields to share ideas and work together to improve the quality of medical education, health care services and scientific research.
