SUMC students on medical mission trip to Qinghai Province

2015-09-09

On 25th to 31st July, 2015, a medical team made up of SUMC students, faculty and staff travelled to Jiayi Village and Shinaihai Country, Qinghai Province to deliver free medical services to local residents, with the principle of trying the best to free patients from diseases. This medical outreach trip was supported by Li Ka Shing Foundation and nearly one hundred faculties and students from ten other universities in China joined this trip as well.

About 1,344 patients received free medical services. More than 170 kinds of Tibetan medicines (averagely RMB 120 for one patient), around 50 pairs of reading and sun glasses, and rice, cooking oil and first-aid kits (more than RMB 180,000 in value) and over 1,000 health education readers were distributed for free to local needy residents.  More than 4,000 locals benefited. In addition, our students organized an art show for the local community, with singing and drama plays.

The 7-day trip provided a good opportunity for our students to experience the life on the Tibetan Plateau. They were deeply encouraged by the sincere gratitude from patients and Tibetan doctors’ dedication to their work. In light of Mr. Li Ka-shing’s ideal to “help the needy with love”, our faculties and students will continue to provide medical aid to the society with enthusiasm and affection.
