This summer, eight excellent graduate students from SUMC were sent to University of Western Australia (UWA), together with graduate students from other four medical schools in China, to attend a summer school training program at UWA. Our students completed all the training tasks as scheduled and were awarded certificates of completion.

From August 3rd to 7th, the students took theoretical courses at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, covering a range of topics including research ethics, research method & design, academic writing, laboratory safety & quality management, morality and code of conduct, and processes & requirements for PhD programs at UWA. In the following week, based on their research fields and backgrounds, the students were placed in Podiatric Medicine Unit at UWA, Centre for Comparative Genomics at Murdoch University, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, and Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Medical Centre for laboratory techniques and clinical skills training. On the last day, the students delivered a report on what they have achieved at UWA. Prof. Ian B Puddey and Prof. Ming-Hao Zheng, Dean and Associate Dean of UWA Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences respectively, listened to the reports and presented the certificates of completion to the participants.

SUMC has organized its graduate students to join the annual summer school program at UWA for six consecutive years since 2010. This program enables our students to learn about the most recent advances in biomedical research at UWA and have the opportunity to apply for its PhD programs. Two of our students who would like to pursue a PhD at UWA have obtained endorsement from their potential supervisors at UWA. This one-month study has also helped our students broaden their international vision and enhance their comprehensive abilities.
