"World Prematurity Day" Celebrated in SUMC First Affiliated Hospital

2016-11-23

On the morning of November 15, to observe the "World Prematurity Day", the large-scale premature health consultation services themed with "Love Promises the Future" were organized by the Neonatology Department of SUMC First Affiliated Hospital. The activities attracted nearly 100 premature infants and older babies and children who were born prematurely along with their parents.

Shaoyan Zhang, Head Nurse of Neonatology introduced how to care for the preterm babies after being discharged from the hospital, while neonatologists conducted physical examinations on the babies, gave health consultations and encouraged the parents to nurture their babies scientifically so that they could join hands with doctors to safeguard healthy growth of the babies. The parents commended that this event not only brought them scientific knowledge of caring for premature babies but also boosted their confidence in healthy growth of their preemies.

During a TV interview after the event, the Chief of Neonatology Xiaoyi Fang said, in recent years, the incidence of prematurity rises as the number of older mothers and high-risk mothers surges. She suggested that main precautions to prevent prematurity include full physical examinations before and during pregnancy and early diagnosis and treatment can reduce chances of prematurity. At present, preterm infants take up one fourth to one third of the total inpatients of the hospital. The Neonatology Department of the hospital has realized seamless integration of inter-departmental consultation, hospitalized treatment, follow-ups after discharge, early evaluation, early intervention and recovery. Furthermore, the hospital provides out-patient specialist services to monitor the growth of premature babies after discharge, offers face-to-face guidance and lectures to teach the parents how to give necessary training on their preemies at home, and provides in-time rehabilitation services to those infants with delayed growth, which contributes to reducing the chances of disability.

The activities are also aimed to appeal to the whole society for special care and love for these little angels born prematurely and help them grow well with a better future.
