Prof Guan Yi and his team from Joint Influenza Research Center of Shantou University Medical College and Hong Kong University Faculty of Medicine have recently received the Top Prize of 2017 National Science and Technology Progress Award for their outstanding research in emerging infectious diseases together with Zhejiang University, Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and several other institutions. The prizes were presented at the ceremony for China's most prestigious awards in science and technology held in the Great Hall of the People on January 8, 2018.

The research of Prof Guan and his team has focused on ecological, evolutionary, pathogenic and transmission mechanisms of H7N9 and other emerging diseases. This national prize to Prof Guan’s team not only acknowledges their original and pioneering contributions to the understanding of such emerging infectious diseases as H7N9, but also is the first of its kind to the nation’s health sector as well as Guangdong’s science and technology sector. The landmark achievements that Prof Guan and his team have made have greatly enhanced China’s international influence in infectious disease control and prevention.

The National Science and Technology Progress Award, among the national Science and Technology Prizes, is to recognize individuals and organizations who have made remarkable contributions to scientific and technological progress.
