Over 100 SUMC students donate blood after severe accident

2010-04-09

At noon on April 8, more than 100 SUMC students stood queuing in heavy rain to volunteer for blood donation in order to save the lives of people who were injured in a severe car accident in Shantou two days earlier. SUMC leaders and staff from relevant departments also arrived on location to offer guidance and help. Local media including Shantou TV and Shantou City News gave live reports.

On the afternoon of April 6, a severe car accident on Nanbing Road killed 10 people and injured 28. Hospitals in Shantou worked hard to treat the wounded but there was insufficient blood for transfusion. The Shantou Blood Center called on citizens to donate blood. SUMC's Students Affairs Office immediately organized a school-wide emergency blood donation. In just a few hours, more than 100 students had registered for the voluntary emergency donation. When interviewed, the students explained they felt it was their responsibility to donate blood in case of such an emergency shortage. Many students requested doctors to draw 400 ml of blood – the maximum allowed. Altogether, 108 students donated blood, resulting in a total of 24,000 ml of collected blood.
