In April 2010, Mr. Li Ka-shing, long-time benefactor of Shantou University and SUMC, announced a donation of C$28 million (HK$214 million) to the University of Alberta, Canada. The donation -- the largest cash gift in the university's history -- will help establish the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology and add the University of Alberta to an elite global health science research network facilitated by the Li Ka Shing Foundation.

With the establishment of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology, the University of Alberta joins the 'East-West Alliance', a global network of medical education and research funded by the Li Ka Shing Foundation. This network also includes University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University in the United States, University of Cambridge and University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, the University of Manitoba and St. Michael's Hospital in Canada, Institut Pasteur in France, and Shantou University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Hong Kong in China.

Shantou University Medical College and the University of Alberta's Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry are currently working with on a number of joint initiatives and cooperative programs including a joint PhD program.
