Prof. Jiang Gu, Vice President of Shantou University and Dean of SUMC, was re-elected President of the Chinese Pathologists Association (CPA) at the fourth annual conference of Chinese pathologists, held in Shantou from August 27 to August 29, 2010.

The annual conference, hosted by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and the Chinese Pathologist Association and organized by SUMC, was held on the beautiful nearby Nan'ao Island. Over 150 domestically renowned pathologists attended the conference. Prof. Yang Jing, Executive Vice Director of the Chinese Medical Doctors Association delivered a keynote address.

CPA's core objective is to provide an effective platform for the development, implementation and reform of professional self-regulation, protection of professional rights and quality control in the Chinese pathology profession. This year's conference focused on the opportunities and challenges that Chinese pathologists are currently facing. Several experts, including CPA President Prof. Jiang Gu, Prof. Jie Chen from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Prof. Xufang Wen from the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Central South University, delivered speeches on important related topics, which were followed by dynamic discussions among the attendants about the future of pathology in China and CPA's responsibilities.

Prof. Stanley J. Robboy, President-elect of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), was also present at the conference with a view to strengthening the cooperative ties between CAP and CPA. At the conference Robboy gave an excellent speech entitled "Pathology in the 21st Century: A Transforming Practice."
