Honorary Chairman of Shantou University and longtime benefactor of SUMC, Mr. Li Ka-shing, met with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of a recent celebration rally in Shenzhen to mark the city's 30th anniversary as China's first Special Economic Zone.

During the high-profile and privileged meeting, President Hu praised Mr. Li Ka-shing as an outstanding entrepreneur and an important contributor to the development of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. In reply, Mr. Li remarked that he would work with all his heart and strength to boost cooperation between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland and to contribute to the prosperity of the country and Hong Kong.

During the course of their friendly talks, President Hu recalled his previous visit to Shantou University in the 1990's. Mr. Li informed President Hu that the university had changed a great deal and had prospered since the President's latest visit. President Hu replied that he would like to visit Shantou University again when the opportunity arises. Mr. Li warmly welcomed President Hu to visit Shantou University once again, and promised that he would come over to accompany the President and lead him around during his next visit to the university.

Since the founding of Shantou University, SUMC has benefited tremendously from Mr. Li's substantial and continuous support. In addition, the Li Ka Shing Foundation has, through its health related charitable activities, over the years provided our students and staff with an excellent platform to put their learning into practice to help the sick and the needy.
