On 13 September 2010 the Chancellor of the University of Oxford (and former Governor of Hong Kong), Lord Patten of Barnes, lead a delegation from the University of Oxford to SUMC.

After a leisurely tour around the medical campus, Lord Patten visited a photo exhibition of the Shantou-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (SOCRU) in the company of SUMC students who are participating or have participated in the collaborative program between SUMC and the University of Oxford.

During the formal welcome meeting, SUMC Dean Prof. Gu Jiang delivered a brief introduction about SUMC, touching upon several recent successful developments at SUMC in the field of research, education and healthcare, as well as the current construction of a new medical campus. Next, Dr. Frieda Law of the Li Ka Shing Foundation explained the latest developments and progress in healthcare community work thanks to the unique relationship between SUMC and the Li Ka Shing Foundation.

Prof. Jeremy Farrar, Director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam, and co-director of SOCRU, gave a detailed introduction about the Shantou-Oxford Clinical Research Unit and the progress that has been made since its recent inception. The meeting was concluded with a number of presentations by SUMC students who had participated in the SOCRU collaboration. They shared their unique experiences and insights about their time at the University of Oxford, which resulted in a lively and cheerful discussion with the visiting delegation.
