2010-11-15

On 3 November 2010 Shantou University hosted the 14th National Telemedicine Educational Symposium. This year, the symposium was jointly organized by Shantou University Medical College and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), an affiliated hospital of the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City specializing in orthopedic surgery and the treatment of rheumatologic conditions. HSS is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the United States and is regarded as one of the top hospitals in the country for joint replacement.

The symposium was presided over by Prof. Jiang Gu, Vice President of Shantou University and Dean of SUMC. Prof. Thomas P. Sculco, Medical Director and Surgeon-in-Chief of HSS, delivered a keynote address at the symposium entitled "Management of Complex Primary and Revision Knee Replacement". Dr. Russel C. Huang, also from HSS, then gave a lecture entitled "Minimally Invasive Lateral Transpsoas Interbody Fusion".

The National Telemedicine Educational Symposium was broadcasted live on the internet. Both the symposium attendants and the online audience actively participated in the discussions through internet-based BBS. China Education Television will broadcast the symposium at a later date.

The symposium was jointly sponsored by the Li Ka Shing Foundation and China Education Television. To date, the Li Ka Shing Foundation has generously sponsored 13 previous national telemedicine symposia. These symposia have significantly helped to promote international academic collaborations and exchange of advanced medical knowledge and skills between participants from all over the world.

In the afternoon, the two visiting experts from HSS attended the 6th National Orthopedics High-level Forum hosted by the SUMC First Affiliated Hospital. Renowned international and domestic orthopedics experts delivered academic reports and participated in discussions on clinical cases. On the sidelines of the forum, the orthopedics department of the SUMC First Affiliated Hospital and HSS also agreed that one doctor from Shantou will be sent to HSS as visiting doctor every year with a view to strengthenening the existing institutional collaboration.
