During the National Day holiday a high-level SUMC delegation set out on a field research and study trip to several leading US and Canadian medical schools and clinical institutions to draw lessons from their experiences in the area of clinical management and development.

The research and study trip formed part of continuing efforts at SUMC aimed at further internationalization and professionalization of the College and the affiliated hospitals following SUMC’s recently obtained authorization to confer clinical PhD degrees and amid nationwide initiatives to push forward the reform of public hospitals in China.

Attending delegates on the high-level study trip included senior SUMC leaders and several directors of the affiliated hospitals. The delegation visited some of SUMC’s longstanding and key institutional partners in Canada and the US, including the medical schools and affiliated hospitals of University of Toronto, University of Manitoba, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and UCLA.

Thanks to friendly exchanges, briefings and demonstrations throughout the visits, the delegates were able to witness and experience how some of the world’s most advanced clinical institutions manage their clinical operations and administration. Simultaneously, these meetings greatly helped strengthening mutual understanding and cooperation between the members of the East-West Alliance, in anticipation of the 2012 East-West Alliance conference which is scheduled to take place in Shantou once again.

Grateful for this unique opportunity, we will cherish these fruitful results at SUMC and strengthen our efforts to further intensify cooperation between the College and the affiliate hospitals, jointly develop new strategies and swiftly follow-up on existing programs, and continue to expand the scope of our international cooperation and exchange activities.
