In August, 15 postgraduate students from SUMC were sent abroad to participate in the 2016 Winter School Program at the University of Western Australia (UWA), together with 137 students from some other universities in China and Vietnam. Our students successfully completed the training program and were awarded a certificate of completion. Among them Feng Senquan and Chen Yixin were honored with prizes for their outstanding presentations.

In the first week, the students took theoretical courses in the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. The topics covered included research ethics, research methods and design, scientific writing for research publication, laboratory safety and quality control, code of ethics and professional conduct, as well as application procedures and requirements of PhD study at UWA. During the next three weeks, the students were placed, based on their research interests and academic backgrounds, in Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Medical Centre, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, and Fresh Start Recovery Center for intensive research training. On August 25-26, the students gathered to report on what they have gained from the program. At the end of the report meeting, certificates were awarded to the participants by Dean Wendy Erber and Associate Dean Ming Hao Zheng of UWA Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

The program enables our students to experience the medical education model at UWA, learn about the most recent advances in biomedical research, and have the opportunity to apply for its PhD programs. This one-month study has helped our students broaden their international vision and enhance their comprehensive abilities.
