On April 15, SUMC conducted a practical course “promotion of rural health care” of the University in Changling Village in Jieyang, in which 5 doctors from SUMC First and Second Affiliated Hospitals, 9 MPH students of SUMC and 42 undergraduates from other colleges of the University were designated to provide volunteer services.

Through playing games, the student volunteers taught local children health knowledge about prevention and control of dental caries, eye health, food safety, etc., which enabled the volunteers to learn through serving. Meanwhile, the medical service team consisting of the MPH students and doctors of SUMC and its affiliated hospitals and the medical staff of the local clinic provided free medical services and home visits to local villagers. They visited four poverty-stricken families to distribute medicine, 5 pairs of crutches, 2 walk helpers, stationeries for children and living necessities, which benefited 650 people.

The voluntary activities enabled the students to have a better understanding of the “public interest-centered in community services” mission of SUMC and raise awareness of urgency and importance of public health.
