The Foreign Language Department of SUMC is responsible for the teaching of college English, medical English and scientific English to students from all levels at SUMC.

Our department offers an ideal platform for English learning within SUMC. We offer several customized language programs to undergraduate, graduate and PhD students. Apart from traditional language teaching methods, we attach great importance to cultivating cross-cultural communication skills and facilitating effective self-study, employing various original methods in the broader context of cultivating an atmosphere of English learning on campus.

With an eye to improving students' overall English communication skills, we organize several extracurricular activities such as English speaking competitions, thematic lectures on English culture, IELTS training sessions, English consultation services and the annual "Scientific and Technological English Cultural Festival".

Our innovative and successful approach to English teaching is reflected in our students' excellent average pass rates in the Chinese national College English Test (CET). Whilst still on the rise, these pass rates have consistently surpassed – and sometimes even doubled – those of their peers at other key universities in China.

Our present teaching staff consists of 1 full professor, 3 associate professors, 3 lecturers and several other teachers and associates. The directors of our department, Prof. Rong-xin Chen and Prof. Ning Su, are widely recognized for their scientific contributions in areas such as Applied Linguistics and English Teaching.
