The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a key education and scientific research department within SUMC and Shantou University.

Our department is responsible for the design and implementation of the microbiology and immunology curriculum, which constitutes one of the three national key disciplines at Shantou University. We have developed various programs and courses in medical immunology and medical microbiology to students from all levels. This includes courses for the 5-year bachelor program and the 7-year combined bachelor/master program. In addition, we offer doctorate programs and post-doc programs in immunology.

The main focus of our scientific research lies on anti-infection immunology and neuroendocrine immunology. Our team, headed by Prof. Li Kang Sheng, has participated in several projects from the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Funds, the Chinese National Natural Science Funds, and the WHO in recent years. This has resulted in numerous significant publications in journals such as Nature, Journal Virology, Brain Research, NeuroImmunoModulation and Neuroscience. We attach great importance to institutional exchange and cooperation, both domestically and internationally, in the field of education and research. We maintain close cooperative ties with the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and the University of Hong Kong.

There are currently 9 staff members in our department, including 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 3 lecturers and various research fellows and technical assistants.
