On 14 January 2011, the second SUMC-Oxford training course was held at SUMC. The course focused on public health and epidemiology. Over 40 public health researchers attended the training, including graduate students majoring in preventive medicine at SUMC, government officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of Guangdong Province, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of Shantou City, and professors from several Chinese universities.

The course consisted of lectures, group discussions and demonstrations. Specialists from the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit Vietnam (OUCRU) and the Public Health and Basic Medical College of Chinese University of Hong Kong were invited as instructors.

The training course was organized by the Shantou-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (SOCRU), an academic collaboration project between SUMC and Oxford University founded in 2010 with the support of the Li Ka Shing Foundation.

In September 2010, Lord Patten, Chancellor of University of Oxford, made a special visit to SUMC and SOCRU.
