Professor William W. Au represented the Shantou University Medical College as the Invited Distinguished International Speaker to the International Congress on Clinical and Laboratory Sciences, Brasov, Romania, June 2013. During the congress, he served on the Welcoming Panel and gave the first Plenary Lecture to open the congress. His presentation is entitled “The challenge assay: a functional DNA repair assay for the prediction of cancer risk, of cancer development and of response to cancer therapy”. His presentation received a lot of attention and positive comments. The second invited speaker was Professor Ian Watson, Liverpool, United Kingdom. He is also President of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. His presentation is focused on patient-focused clinical medicine for improvement of efficacy and cost-effectiveness. Other international speakers came from Bulgaria, CzechRepublic, France, Moldova and United States. Professor Au is the only participant from China.

The conference was attended by 350 participants. Most of them were professors and clinicians. Besides the learning of innovative and translational scientific information, there were enthusiastic and in-depth interactions between the speakers and participants.

During the conference, Professor Au also interacted with other outstanding scientists and clinicians for collaborations in promoting ongoing programs at SUMC. Such collaborations include possibility in research, clinical services and education activities. For example, Professor Watson from UK is glad to work with us on activities to improve clinical efficacy and cost effectiveness. Professor Palicka from Czech Republic is glad to exchange clinical lecturers and medicals students with the English medical program in his medical school. Professor Au continues to identify international opportunity for our faculty and students.
