2016-04-01

On March 31st, Professor Ciechanover, member of the Israeli National Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Foreign Fellow), visited the laboratory of Professor Zhang Guojun, dean of the Affiliated Cancer Hospital, and discussed technical developments and academic collaborations. Dr. Ciechanover was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 along with Dr. Avram Hershko and Dr. Irwin Rose “for the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation”. During his visit, Dean Zhang first warmly welcomed Dr. Ciechanover to SUMC. He then introduced the research directions of the lab, which includes multi-disciplinary work on basic and clinical breast cancer research. Next, he talked about the lab’s newest research on ubiquitin-mediated Notch family protein degradation and the early results. Dr. Ciechanover was keen on the topic, constantly asking questions that he had.

Both parties express a desire to work together in the future. They also agreed preliminarily on graduate students exchange and mutual visits of oncology experts, and furthermore, to apply for international grants together. Dr. Ciechanover was friendly to the students and encouraged them to be brave on the long road of discovery.
