Two Professors Ranked Among "Most Cited Chinese Researchers”

Two professors have made SUMC proud for being listed among the 2016 Most Cited Chinese Researchers in the latest rankings released by Elsevier. They are Prof. Melitta Schachner and Prof. Gu Jiang who ranked third in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology and 72nd in medicine respectively.

The 2016 List of Most Cited Chinese Researchers, which is based on a systematic analysis of Chinese scholars in terms of international status with objective data of 2016 drawn from Elsevier’s Scopus research database, recognizes 1,776 Chinese scholars across 38 different disciplines.

Prof. Melitta Schachner is a world-renowned neurobiologist, an academician of the German Academy of Sciences, a German meritorious scientist, one of the key discoverers of neural cell adhesion molecule L1, one of the top 20 outstanding natural scientists of Germany, and one of the top 100 prominent neurobiologists of the world. Her research provides insights into the role of the neural cell adhesion molecule L1 in repair and regeneration of the central nervous system. Prof. Schachner has been devoted to research in neuroscience for over 40 years with about 800 papers published on Cell, Nature, Science, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Genetics, Nature Cell Biology, J.E.M., P.N.A.S.. She serves as reviewer for a number of academic journals and ranks among the world’s top 100 most cited neuroscientist.

Prof. Gu Jiang is a senior molecular pathologist and one of the forerunners of molecular morphology, specializing in precision medicine, molecular morphology and molecular pathology. His research team has made innovative breakthrough achievements in research on emerging infectious diseases and pathogenesis of cancer with a number of national prizes awarded. Prof. Gu has published seven English monographs and one Chinese monograph in molecular pathology as well as over 160 SCI papers on the globally well-known journals including Lancet, JAMA and JEM, mostly as the corresponding author.

Scientists named as the highly cited researchers are acknowledged as people of influence in science, and the works published by them are recognized as contributive to the advancement of scientific research.
