The Department of Cell Biology and Genetics is a key educational and scientific research unit of SUMC. we are responsible for education and research in the field of cell biology, medical genetics, and human reproductive biology.

We offer specialized courses in Cell Biology, Medical Genetics, and Human Reproductive Biology to students in the 5-year undergraduate program, students in the 7-year combined undergraduate-master program, and graduate students.

By employing fundamentally new genetic and biochemical approaches, the discipline of Cell Biology and Genetics lays the foundation for advances in human health and biotechnology. Standing at the core of biological sciences, this discipline also helps our students to understand the basic concepts and principles of associated disciplines, and to establish a solid foundation for their clinical practice and scientific research in the future.

We are involved in a variety of experimental and clinical research projects. Our present research work focuses on studying the functions of non-coding RNA in tumor cells and vertical transmission of virus, such as HBV. We have published paper in various famous academic journals, such as Hypertension, Cardiovascular Research, International Journal of Cancer, Experimental Cell Research, Fertility and Sterility. Several projects supported by the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation Committee (NSFC), Natural Science Foundation Committee of Guangdong Province have been or are presently being carried out.

Our department presently has 10 staff members. The team is headed by Prof. Dong-yang Huang and Prof. Tian-hua Huang.
