The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an important teaching and research department within SUMC, and the main contributor to the Guangdong provincial key discipline of biochemistry and molecular biology at SUMC.

Our department is responsible for the design and implementation of various programs and courses within SUMC related to biochemistry, molecular biology, gene expression and regulation, and bioinformatics. This includes diversified courses for the 5-year bachelor programs and 7-year combined bachelor/master programs, as well as advanced programs for doctorate and post-doctorate students. Our curriculum was accredited as a provincial key discipline in 2008, and students from various levels have won important provincial prizes.

We are actively involved in scientific research. Our main research fields are:

• biochemical and molecular aspects of hepatic metabolisms
• molecular oncology
• cell biochemistry and molecular toxicology
• reproductive molecular biology

Over the past five years, we have obtained various grants from the National Natural Science Foundation and the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation. Our department currently consists of 16 lecturers, including several professors, associate professors, senior engineers and technicians. The head of the department is Prof. En-min Li.
