The Department of Histology and Embryology is a key educational and scientific research unit within SUMC responsible for education in the area of histology and embryology on the bachelor, master, doctor and post-doctorate level at SUMC.

Our courses include "Histology and Embryology" in the 5-year and the 7-year clinical programs, as well as "Human Development and Functional Histology", "Cell Culture", and "Histology Technology" in various other graduate programs. We also participate in several specialized course modules related to cardiovascular diseases, pulmonology, digestion and nutrition, blood, infection and immunity, neurology, and the reproductive system.

We are actively engaged in scientific research on the biology of tumor cells. Effectively utilizing modern cell biology technologies, we focus on the basic theory of tumor pathogenesis and biology therapy. Over the past five years, we undertook six key scientific research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation and the Guangdong Natural Science Foundation. Around 50 scientific papers were published at home and abroad, of which 16 in SCI-listed journals. After decades of hard work and refinement, we have developed a competitive scientific advantage which has resulted in several academic and research awards for our department and individual staff members. We remain fully dedicated to our goal of advancing scientific research and the cultivation of talents.
