The Institute of Inflammation and Immunity was established in 2001 under the auspices of the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is part of the Pathology and Physiopathology national key discipline at SUMC. The Institute was recognized as Key Laboratory of Immunopathology by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province in 2005.

Our Institute offers post-graduate and post-doctoral training. Our main research fields include the pathogenesis and prevention of inflammatory diseases such as asthma and allergy; innate immunity and acquired immunity in cancer, inflammation and autoimmune diseases; Toll-like receptors, chemokines and their signal transduction in uveitis, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis; transplantation immunology and autoimmune disease (especially regulatory T cells and the molecular mechanisms underlying immunosuppression); and molecular biology of cancer.

In the past decade, our Institute accomplished over 20 national and provincial research projects including one state "973" project, and nine National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects. Our total research funding has exceeded RMB 30 million. We have published more than 200 scientific publications including 45 SCI papers with an aggregate impact factor of 100. Our Institute has won several national and provincial awards including the first prize in Science and Technology of Guangdong Province. We have several active international collaboration programs including those with the University of Oxford, Harvard University and NIH.
