The Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has been engaged in teaching students at SUMC in the field of preventive medicine since the founding of Shantou University in 1981.

We offer specialized programs to undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students in the field of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. In 2005, we launched the Epidemiology and Hygienic Statistics master degree program, followed by the Public Health master degree program in 2009. Our broad range of programs and modules comprise mandatory and elective courses in preventive medicine, medical statistics, evidence-based medicine, digestion and nutrition, toxicology, epidemiology (basic, molecular and injury epidemiology), and health & society (including environmental health and occupational health).

Our research activities focus on areas such as epidemiology of chronic diseases, injury prevention and control, environmental toxicology, molecular cancer epidemiology, and early diagnosis and prevention of esophageal cancer. Our papers have been published in reputed scientific journals at home and abroad, and we have been granted several key national, ministerial and provincial level research projects.

Our teaching staff currently consists of 6 faculty members. The department is headed by Prof. Ke Li.
